Summary:

This project developed a process for performing Commodity Variation/Standardization Analyses (CVSAs) by the NSRP Commonality Working Group (CWG).  These analyses are performed to reduce total ownership costs by standardizing requirements and eliminating unnecessary variation. Technical and administrative requirement variation impacts material commonality and often results in manufacturing inefficiencies affecting cost, quality, and schedule. CVSAs can be performed independently or in conjunction with NAVSEA-led Deep Dives that identify common material/equipment that has the lowest total ownership cost for the Navy..  The CWG believes that including the private shipyards in the analysis process will ensure the NAVSEA Virtual Shelf is populated with material/equipment that is common between the participating shipyards, has been fully qualified for use across contracts, and meets the Navy’s guidelines for total ownership cost.
