September 2014 - August 2016
NSRP ASE Investment: $1.4M
Industry Investment: $2.2M
Objective:
Build and test a digital process that will provide cost effective Product Life Cycle Support for in-service ships. This digital process will replace existing manual processes currently performed during ship checks and provide an as-configured 3D Product Model for ship in-service maintenance.
Summary:
Today’s ship check activities require costly pre-availability visits by shipyard personnel to photograph, sketch, and measure those spaces to be upgraded and modernized. After the initial data collection effort, CAD Engineering drawings are created using the visit notes and other trip documentation. Hard copy drawing products are used for defining the ship’s data to plan, fabricate, and modify the ship. Preparation, handling, storing, and revising the drawing products includes creating 2D schematics, loading 3D solids, converting back to 2D schematics, and delivering .tif files to the document management vaults where hardcopies are made and supplied to requesting processes. The documents, henceforth called “drawings”, will be revised numerous times after their initial release. Constant awareness and management is required by each using organization to insure hull specific effectivity changes are communicated from Engineering and Design to downstream Manufacturing and Assembly operations.
The goal of this project was to reduce ship total ownership cost (TOC) to the Navy by radically re-engineering the in-service Ship Check process. The project team developed and integrated the scan process and used the collected point cloud data to build as-configured 3D product models that include imbedded dimensions, textual data, inspection requirements, and material information as a replacement for hard coy manufacturing and assembly products.
