Objective:

Implementing the Virtual Shelf into the Common Parts Catalog (CPC) and NNS Parts Catalog will encourage variation reduction across systems and promote reduction of Total Ownership Cost (TOC). Shipbuilders will be able to easily access the Virtual Shelf information to select NAVSEA 06-approved components and determine if there is a different component or specification they can use.  Sharing Navy and Shipyard information will avoid duplication of effort and proliferation of new materials which have a significant effect on total ownership costs. This project will also investigate enabling the CPC data to be shared between shipyards, a capability which was lost after the 2011 upgrade.

Summary:

The primary objectives of this project were to: (1) promote material commonality by reducing unnecessary variation in shipyard parts across the Navy Shipbuilding program; (2) lay the groundwork to support future sharing of part data with NAVSEA and shipbuilders; and (3) establish a foundation for future initiatives to develop standard part definition in the NAVSEA  Virtual Shelf, shipbuilder’s catalogs and supporting manufacturers.

The project team determined the steps necessary to synchronize information in the Navy’s Virtual Shelf with shipyard parts catalogs, including the Common Parts Catalog and the Newport News Shipbuilding Parts Catalog.  This synchronization encourages variation reduction across systems and promotes reduction of Total Ownership Cost (TOC) for ships.  Once implemented shipbuilders will be able to easily access the information required to select shipyard/NAVSEA approved components and determine if there is a different component or specification they can use.  Sharing Navy and shipyard information will avoid duplication of effort and proliferation of new materials which have a significant effect on ship construction cost
