Objective:
This project was undertaken to identify differences in requirements, across contracts, related to the design and manufacturing of valves built to the 803-2177525 specification. Supplier feedback has demonstrated that there is a significant amount of requirement variation between the procuring shipyards and Government activities. There is also a tremendous amount of variation in the Objective Quality Evidence (e.g. first article testing, weld procedures, non-destructive testing, packing requirements, test reports and certification, etc.) and Government Source Inspection requirements invoked on suppliers. Technical and administrative requirement variation impacts material commonality and often results in manufacturing inefficiencies affecting cost, quality, and schedule.
The primary objectives of this project were to: reduce unnecessary equipment variation stemming from contract requirements and detailed design documentation; and establish equivalent relationships between shipyard part numbers, vendor part numbers, and Navy National Stock Numbers (NSNs) for Navy 2177525 valves.
The project team recommends a two-step process, described in the final report, to accomplish standardization and maximize commonality in 525 valves across programs.
